Kayak Zak’s owner Marna Powell fishes for a duck and wins a Madaket
cruise for two Friday night at Humboldt Baykeeper’s third annual
Birthday Bash, a fundraiser for the Humboldt Bay group, at the Arcata
Community Center. Four hundred guests showed their support as they
enjoyed cocktails, dinner, a raffle, silent auction, a performance by
students from the Humboldt State University West African drumming and
dance class, and dancing to the West African Highlife Band. Hurricane
Kate’s catered the sold-out dinner, serving New York steaks, pine
nut-crusted halibut, African sweet potatoes and squash. Melvin McKinney
was honored at the bash with this year’s Waterkeeper of the Year award.
Humboldt Baykeeper works to protect Humboldt Bay by using education,
scientific research and law enforcement to fight pollution. Joni
