Fisheries Resources

Over 115 species of fish have been recorded in the Bay, of which at least 50, including the big skate, herring, poacher, pacific tomcod, seven-gill cow shark and cabezon, are resident. Sport and commercial fishing in and around the Bay is a significant part of the local economy, and emblematic of the area’s cultural heritage. The area boasts a productive commercial salmon and albacore fishing fleet as well as a large annual dungeness crab harvest. Humboldt Bay also produces 90% of all the oysters harvested in California.

Approximately 450 people are employed in the commercial fishing industry in Humboldt County. Over 200 commercial vessels list Eureka as home port and over 500 vessels from other West Coast ports use the Bay’s facilities annually delivering catch to the seafood buyers located in Humboldt County.
